Searching For Clues

So sorry for the unavoidable absence, it seems bad luck has dealt me another blow.  Recently my external hard drive containing at least 80% of my artwork and texture collections, let alone other resources like brush collections, works in the making and my music collection was lost.  My old hard drive was showing signs of concern, you know, the obnoxious grinding noises and intermittent peek-a-boo contents, so I purchased a new hard drive (Western Digital USB 3.0) and transferred content from the old hard drive to the new, which was so painful and slow due to the rapidly aging of the old HD.  Two days later it seems my new (Western Digital USB 3.0) died on me, locked up and won't even open, and yes it seems I've lost years of work and color in my hair, not to mention an arsenal of verbal expletives in the process.

Starting over SUCKS, but unfortunately it has to be done, so, with another new hard drive (fingers crossed) and cloud storage, I've been spending all my free time downloading and storing what I have loaded at various places all over the web.  I'm really starting to believe in the old saying,"if I didn't have bad luck, I'd have no luck at all" very strongly.  Enough ranting from me, just thought I'd let you know I'm still breathing and hopefully I can take some time away from disc recovery this weekend and spend some positive time to put something new together to post.  Hope to see you soon and may you and yours have a wonderful weekend.

Peace

Hey, it's me again. If it would help, I have an extensive collection of your work in the original download sizes you offered, from the time when you were Ghostbones to the present day . . .

Jerry,
When I had a similar problem I was able to take my to a computer tech. who was able to recover my data. It was not cheap, but very worth it. Perhaps you could have the same luck. Your generosity with has come back around to you, being an aid. I think that part is pretty cool - I hope you do too. I appreciate and am sad for what you are going through.

Most sincerely,
Tammy

Dear Jerry,
I'm so, so sorry! We rely so much on these pieces of electronic gadgetry who seem to do their jobs so quietly and seamlessly...until they don't. It is heartbreaking to lose so much work (our iBook died while I was planning our wedding and all of my designs for our hand-made invitations, programs, menus, etc. went with it). I'm keeping all kinds of good thoughts for you for disk recovery, which is very successful a lot of the time (we've just had very good luck with that recently with my husband's computer).

Hoping for the very best for you,

Betty

Is there not someway that we ,ur fans, can help? A lot of us downloaded your textures and brushes so why couldn't we find someway for you to download them from us. I know it wouldn't be the originals but it could help save time so you don't have to remake a lot of them. It's just an idea...

Oh Jerry! I am so sorry! I can't even imagine all that you've lost. Our thoughts are with you.

So sorry about the loss of your work. I hope you'll be able to find a lot of it back.

I love your graphic with your photo in the magnifying glass. Cool! On the bright side, it's good that so much of what you had done is backed up on the web so you can get it back. If you weren't such a sharing person, it would have been different, right? I have a suggestion. Maybe you could fit quite a bit of it onto a few DVDs after it's all recovered. I worry constantly about my EHDs failing--no one escapes, it seems! And we all need a break from the computer now and then, too! Take care.

Wow Jerry, how frustrating. After reading your story however, I am going out to buy a second external hard drive! Best of luck to you in getting it all straightened out.

I have had camera cards and an external hard drive crash. I thought I'd lost everything but the lab where I get my work printed happens to be owned by an ex cop and he had the programs necessary to retrieve everything. What he couldn't get, a computer geek friend of his was able to, so don't give up and don't pitch them. Good Luck!

De Madera said...

So sorry Jerry!!
As I sit her on my laptop trying to move all of my backed up files onto my new external.

Because like you. Mine died. I can't believe how slow the process is.

I had an external, backed up to another external because I have already gone through the process of loosing it all. The grief was terrible! I feel your pain. I have a full folder of your work that I would be happy to share back.

I am praying a computer geek can retrieve your things off the bad new hard drive. Too saaaaaad! I have a collection of your work, but it may not be as extensive as other peeps. Glad to help in any way I can. I will be here in our bunker listening to the hurricane outside.

What rotten luck! How terribly frustrating and disappointing.

Terrible news indeed... So sorry for you and your wonderful works. Really hope you can retrive as much as you can of your images.
I'm so afraid to lose my own pics I back up my works on 3 different external hard disks! It's a shame your WD died so soon - too soon!
On a side note, I always try to buy a drive with an on/off switch (rare nowadays) so I can turn it on when needed and avoid overheating it.

Hope to see you back online soon!

I feel your pain!! Sorry to hear about the drive and data.

My Mac hard drive failed about 2 months ago, the data could not be retrieved. Thankfully I had 2 backup drives which had 95% of my work, I did loose some things since I backuped manually.

So hang in there - get 2 backup drives not one and set up an automatic system so they backup every night. Mac's do it automatically through Time Machine.

Looking forward to seeing new work from you soon!

Donna said...

Oh no! I try to warn everyone that hard drive crashes can happen at any time, so it is good to do regular file backups! I even do double backups of my photos, I am so paranoid. I hope that you can retrieve a lot of it. Thank goodness you posted at a lot of the photo web hosting site.

Been there, done that, just a little while ago. Know all about it, Jerry, and yes, it SUCKS. Hope all goes well my friend. Regards/Roy.

You're so generous - thank you so much for your gifts. I can't imagine HOW you accomplish so much, but I'm glad that you do. I echo the sentiments of those who believe your work MAY be retrievable by a computer whiz. I'm new (today) to your blog, but I know that your loyal fans will give BACK all of the files you've lost (and maybe some extras!) ;-) Hang in there.

Jerry ...
I can relate to what you're experiencing. When I switched from my old Mac with 'Tiger' to the new one with 'Snow Leopard' (and the i7 chipset), I panicked when my Western Digital FireWire 800 2TB drives wouldn't connect to the new machine. The problem, as it turned out, was solvable just by reformatting each hard drive and getting rid of the WD pre-formatting. Biggest problem was swapping data back and forth among drives without losing any - and I don't have 'cloud' storage. I'm happy you can get your work back, but I regret hearing that you had to deal with the loss of the WD USB drive. I can't recommend their FireWire 800 drive highly enough ... you may want to consider those for your next XHD purchase. Good luck and thanks for all you do for us.

Magpie Magic said...

What a bummer! I've had problems with WD and although they're pretty good at replacing stuff, it's still no good if you don't have your files. With mine the problem was a failed power supply. I changed the power supply and it worked fine again... ? However, they always want you to send in the thing and then send you a new one, instead of just sending you a power supply to try.

Hope you get it all back and sorted. It's a major pain in the backside.

Dammit! That really sucks Jerry, but please keep it strong. I've heard of stories similar to this happen to the greatest creative people, like Bobby Chiu (digital painter).
I know people have suggested it, but have you tried taking your two broken hard drives to a technician? There's a chance they can retrieve what you've lost- although at a pretty high price.

This is such a terrible feeling to think that all your hard work is gone.. I have enjoyed and used your files and sincerely hope that it works out well for you. You are such a generous person.

Just FYI, after this happened to me the last time, I began to use Carbonite as a backup source. It shouldn't be the only backup but the beauty of it that it backs up without your knowing about it and your files are available to you from anywhere else as well.. I'm surprised more people don't know about it.

Good luck to you and thanks so much for all your great work!

I just found your blogsite today. What a joy!

I watched the slide show of your work in awe...

Jerry, you such an incredibly gifted artist with extraordinary vision. More than that, you are a generous human being to offer your love's labor to the public without a price tag.

It speaks to how much you love what you do, and it shows in each image and brush stroke.

I'm so sorry for your recent drive crash. You've reminded me to make backups ... which I will do this evening. I hope you will recover from that quickly and without further problem.

I will be back to show my support via PayPal just as soon as I can!

Jerry, take the broken drive out and put it in an external usb case and browse to it that way. Many times a drive that won't boot will allow browsing. I have used several softwares to get files off stubborn drives if the external case doesn't work for you..don't give up too soon and I am sorry to hear this. take care

I lost three Western Digital My Books that suddenly decided they wanted to be re-formatted. No explanation, no help from the company, one month out of warranty, and they died, one at a time. I lost everything on them. I'll never buy anything from WD again. I also lost my C drive as I was installing a brand new OS a few years ago, and had nightmares with MS ever after with that OS. That drive? Also a WD. Never again. I'm so sorry you've had bad luck with them, too.
